Support the Bid

Like any other bid, ours could only have succeeded with the support of other fans. Giving us money gave us the ability to have great parties and give away great Finnish prizes at bid tables, hopefully at a convention you attended! Most of all, you helped us convince the international community that Helsinki would be a fantastic place to have Worldcon in 2017. We appreciate all the help you provided us!

Our list of supporters is available on this site, along with a list of our sponsors. If you were a friend or subscriber of the bid and voted in site selection at Sasquan, you are an automatic attending member of the convention. For more details about our bid support levels, please see below.

As we are now Worldcon 75, it is no longer possible to join the bid as a supporter. Our supporting membership rates were:

Pre-supporting membership €20
Pre-opposing membership €35
Friend of the Bid €80
Bid Subscriber €200

Payments via Holvi (Visa, MasterCard, Finnish bank transfer) were received by Maa ja ilma ry, our Finnish non-profit registered association. Payments via PayPal show up on your statement as Arisia, Incorporated, who kindly assisted us with our US banking, and were received by the bid's US presence.

What do these support levels mean, anyway?

Supporting the bid by giving the bid money helps us pay for the costs of bidding (printing flyers, making t-shirts, throwing parties at cons, etc). We appreciate all levels of support! There are several options to choose from.

The Pre-Supporting Membership is the most common way to support the bid. Unless you tell us otherwise, we put your name on our website as a Supporter and thank you profusely for your support.

The Pre-Opposing Membership is a way to give a little more if you have the ability. Throughout the seventy-five plus years of Worldcon history, many Worldcon bids have offer an "anti-bid" as a sort-of-tongue-in-cheek way for a person to give money to a bid. It's intended to be humorous since you are declaring yourself against the bid, yet helping the bid by giving the bid more money than the pre-supporters. Sometimes, people who worry they would become staff have "pre-opposed" our bid.

The Friend of the Bid is a way to help the bid even more than the the Pre-Supporters. For becoming a Friend of the Bid, we offer you a gift -- often a blue "Helsinki in 2017" t-shirt with the running bear logo, but sometimes a book, jewelry made by the bid, or something else. Should you support the bid at the Friend of the Bid level, and you vote at Sasquan in Spokane this upcoming August for the location of Worldcon in 2017, and Helsinki wins the vote and becomes the location of the 2017 Worldcon, you will be automatically enrolled with us as an attending member of our Worldcon (i.e. - you will not have to pay any additional money for a membership to our Worldcon).

Bid Subscriber is a way to help the bid even more by giving the most money possible. You receive all the perks of Friend of the Bid status - free t-shirt and complimentary membership to our Worldcon should you vote and should we win. You might enjoy another little something extra from the bid. We greatly appreciate our Subscribers!

Three things to note:

  1. If you choose to support us at the Friend of the Bid or Bid Subscriber levels, and Helsinki loses the vote for the 2017 Worldcon, we unfortunately do not refund the money. We've used it to run this bid; there's nothing to refund.

  2. Should you support us at the Pre-Supporting or Pre-Opposing Membership levels, and Helsinki wins the vote for the 2017 Worldcon, that money does not count toward your eventual membership at our Worldcon in 2017.

  3. Should you support us at any level, and another bid wins the vote for the 2017 Worldcon, any money you give the Helsinki bid does not roll over to the other winning bid (e.g. - if you support Helsinki at the Friend of the Bid level, you vote at Sasquan in Spokane this upcoming August for the location of the 2017 Worldcon, but say, Montreal wins the vote and becomes the seat of the 2017 Worldcon. By voting you become their supporting member, just like everyone else who voted, but you will not get an attending membership like you would with Helsinki).

Kiitos! Thank you for any support you can give us, and don't forget to vote!

Our first pre-supporter hotel room raffle was drawn on February 28, 2014, Kalevala Day. Congrats to our first winner, Michael Pargman, and all of our subsequent winners! If we win the bid for Worldcon in 2017, they will have a free hotel stay.
